TTP Strikes Gold in the 2022 Brandon Hall Group Excellence in Technology Awards

We are thrilled to announce Technical Training Professionals (TTP) innovative power generation training partnership with AES has won a Gold Brandon Hall Group Excellence in Technology Award. The joint submission was recognized with the highest award level of Gold in the Learning and Development: Best Advance in Instructor-Led Training Management and Delivery category.

“We are honored to be recognized with a prestigious Brandon Hall Group award for our training program partnership with AES,” said Technical Training Professionals CEO Kelsey Gamble. “I’m so proud of the amazing TTP team and thankful every day for the hard work they put into each and every project.”

“What a well-deserved recognition! TTP’s training approach and amazing 3D visuals set the bar in our industry,” said AES Clean Energy Vice President of Project Management Ron Rodrique. “We are appreciative of the Brandon Hall Group for recognizing the importance of innovative talent management solutions and honored to be counted among the list of Gold award winners.”

About the Project: Repowering Southern California with Exceptional Training Delivery

The award-winning training program was developed by TTP to support the upskilling and reskilling of the AES workforce as the company transitioned its Southern California critical power generation resources from outdated and inefficient conventional steam power generation to state-of-the-art, highly efficient, and more automated combined cycle combustion turbine generation. With a workforce averaging 25 years of experience on the old conventional power plant, it was critical for the training program to be customized not only to the AES site and new equipment but to the needs of the AES team.

“We set ambitious goals for repowering Southern California. We knew we could not achieve them without prioritizing the needs of our staff and that required a reliable, experienced, and forward-thinking training partner,” said AES Clean Energy VP Ron Rodrique. “TTP stepped up to the challenge and built a comprehensive training program that engaged our team whether they were on a computer, reading a training manual, or walking around with an instructor learning in their actual work environment.”

Leveraging custom, site-specific 3D animations and models of the new AES site and equipment, TTP built an integrated training program with eLearning courses, on-site and remote instructor-led training (ILT), training manuals, job aids, competency assessments, and more. ILT was the highlight of the new training as it offered learners the opportunity to connect all materials to their actual on-site work and learn from a skilled instructor.

The flipped approach to content delivery – eLearning first, ILT second – was key to the increased engagement with the instructor. In fact, the facilitator-led discussion sessions often resulted in comments like, I have been working with this equipment for 23 years and never knew it worked that way.

“Our focus at TTP is on providing learners with a high-quality education, and our partnership with AES allowed us to create a training program that was tailored to their specific needs,” said TTP CEO Kelsey Gamble. “The results of this program have been truly impressive, showing the difference that a well-designed training program can make in the efficient and cost-effective operation of the facilities that are crucial to America’s infrastructure.”

The new program led to savings of more than $1.6 million in training costs and reduced training from six months to six weeks while also improving staff retention and site operations stats. Three years into operation, the plant is producing an Equivalent Availability Factor (EAF) of 98% compared to the industry average of 87-90%. Each percentage point is worth approximately $1.5 million.

This model now serves as the blueprint for the AES TTP training partnership in support of AES’ vision of being the world’s leading power company and their commitment to improving lives by delivering the greener, smarter energy solutions to meet the world needs.
